James Findlay was born at Highbridge, Somerset in December 1856 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1872. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Modeste off the Malay Peninsula in the Perak operations of 1875-76, and aboard the Dragon in the Egypt operations of 1882. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1885, Findlay was pensioned ashore as a Chief Petty Officer in December 1894.
