He became an Ensign in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards on 10 April 1793, and served the campaigns in Flanders under H.R.H. the Duke of York in 1794, being promoted to Captain in October of that year. He served subsequently in Portugal and Spain, including the Corunna operations, where he commanded No. 7 Company of the 3rd Battalion, and was Assistant Adjutant General at Cadiz in 1811 . Prior to joining the Army, Capel graduated as B.A. from Oxford University in 1790, and M.A. in 1791, in which year he also became a Member of Lincolns Inn.
