Wilby Powell was born in Northamptonshire in April 1834 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class in October 1853. Joining H.M.S. Diamond a few days later, he went on to witness active service in the Crimea, being advanced to Able Seaman in February 1855. Powell was discharged in February 1857.
