James Brown Hornor Boyd originally purchased an Ensigncy in the 22nd Regiment in November 1850 but exchanged into the 17th Regiment in the following year. A Lieutenant by the outbreak of hostilities in the Crimea, he served in that theatre of war from December 1854 until May 1856, and was present at the siege of Sebastopol and the assault on the Great Redan in June 1855, in addition to the bombardment and capture of the fortress of Kinburn. He had, meanwhile, been slightly wounded in the hand whilst on duty in the trenches on 4 June 1855, in which latter month he obtained his Captaincy. Boyd went on to serve in Ireland and Canada, purchased a Majority in December 1868 and was advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1879. He was placed on the Retired List in the following year.
