Henry Wake was born at Windsor, Berkshire and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment in March 1886, aged 18 years, direct from the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment. His subsequent career of 21 years with the Colours witnessed considerable time overseas, including service in Bermuda 1888-91, Halifax, Nova Scotia 1891-93, the West Indies 1893-95 and South Africa 1895 until August 1900, the latter including his part in the battle of Talana and the defence of Ladysmith. He had meanwhile been advanced to Lance-Corporal in February 1891, to Corporal in April 1893 and to Sergeant in April 1897, and was finally discharged in the rank of Colour-Sergeant in March 1907.
