London Gazette 18 February 1921: ‘In recognition of gallant conduct in the performance of military duties.’
Wylly’s regimental history confirms that Cantrill was decorated for behaving with ‘special gallantry’ when ‘C’ Company of the 1st Battalion was ambushed near Lough Rea, Co. Roscommon, in October 1920. A Lieutenant and a private soldier were wounded on the same occasion.
