East York Militia (The Beverley Buffs), an 1855 pattern infantry officer’s shako, the last of the ‘beaver’ or French plush patterns, the stiffened body with sunken black patent leather top bottom bracing band and front and rear peaks, these lined with green skiver, the shako bears the superb gilt and silver 1844/55 pattern plate (not uncommon in the militia), this being a crowned eight pointed star with central silver rose and Garter proper, a dependent scroll ‘East York’, original leather chin strap, the gilt plume holder of incorrect pattern and replacement white over red ball plume; internally the original sweat band (torn) and strip remains of the original silk lining, retailed by ‘W Buckmaster & Co’, the body has suffered three fractures which have been reasonably restored, a considerable amount of the plush finish is missing £400-600
