The battleship Inflexible, launched in 1876 and completed in 1881, carried the heaviest guns in the fleet - four 16 inch muzzle-loaders in two turrets. Present at the battle of Alexandria, she fired eighty-eight of her monster 16 inch shells against the Ras-el-Tin, Mex, Ada and Pharos Forts. In the action she sustained the most damage of all the British ships present.
John James Hornsey Montague was born in Ryde, Isle of Wight on 29 October 1860 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in January 1881. Sold with copied service details.
