Robert Griffiths, a native of Newport, enlisted in the 1st Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment in August 1914, aged 18 years and was first embarked for active service in February 1915, and, with the exception of two or three periods of leave, appears to have witnessed continuous service on the Western Front until the end of the War. His Soldiers’ Pay Book on Active Service (original included) further reveals that he passed a course at the Anti-Gas School in February 1917, and was advanced to Corporal in September of the same year. He was honourably discharged in January 1919, under King’s Regulations 392 (xvi.a); also sold with four wartime photographic postcards, including a picture of a Monmouthshire Regiment football team.
