John Johnson was born in Sunderland and enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment direct from the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment in November 1883, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of 21 years with the Colours, he served for ten of them in the East Indies, but was also present in the Ashanti operations of 1896 as a member of ‘D’ Company. Johnson, who was discharged in November 1904, was also awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal.
