Private T. Grundy, Royal Marines, was killed in action on 22 September 1914 when serving on the armoured cruiser Cressy. The vessel in company with her sister-ships, the Aboukir and Hogue, was sunk by the German submarine U.9. The triple disaster cost the lives of over 1,400 men. Private Grundy was the son of Thomas and Fanny Grundy of Battersea, London and husband of Violet Adelaide Grundy of 294 Queen’s Road, Battersea. His name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
