France, Jean Chauveau, 1903, a bronze plaque by Dr P. Richer, bust right, rev. Chauveau draws serum from a horse held by two vets, 70 x 57mm (Storer 612; BDM V, 113-14; cf. BDW 13, 147). Obverse very fine, reverse extremely fine, rare (£60-80)
Dr Jean-Baptiste Auguste Chauveau (1827-1917), professor and veterinarian, worked closely with Claude Bernard (see lot 2602). Richer’s plaque, particularly the reverse, which depicts a scene in Chauveau’s laboratory at the École Vétérinaire de Lyon, was highly praised at the time by Forrer and by the student-collector René Lacronique in Gaz.
