A Boer War D.S.O. group of four to Captain F. R. Ewart, King's Liverpool Regiment

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER, V.R.; QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Defence of Ladysmith, Laing's Nek, Belfast, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, the last two clasps unofficially riveted (Capt., L'pool Regt.); KING'S SOUTH AFRICA, 2 clasps (Capt., D.S.O., Liverpool Regt.); ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY, Bronze Medal (Capt., Jany. 29.1906), together with a miniature portrait of the receipient in uniform mounted in a glazed gilt frame, nearly extremely fine (4)

Captain Frank Rowland Ewart served in the South African war with the 1st Battalion Liverpool Regiment, and took part in the operations in Natal in 1899, including the actions at Rietfontein and Lombard's Kop; the defence of Ladysmith; operations in Natal, March to June 1900; and in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to 29th November 1900, including the action at Belfast. Captain Ewart was present at the action near Van Wyke's Vlei on 21 August, 1900, when Corporal H. J. Knight of his Mounted Infantry Company, won the Victoria Cross, Ewart, himself, featuring in the citation. Captain Ewart was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order, London Gazette, 19 April 1901. While serving with the Lagos Battalion, W.A.F.F., Captain Ewart attempted to save the life of an African in a shark infested lagoon, for which he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's bronze medal. He died at sea, en route from Lagos to England, 13 June, 1906.
