Harold Wilkinson, who was born in Hyde, Cheshire, was killed in action on the Somme on 16 November 1916, while serving in the 9th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. His mother received a letter from Company Sergeant-Major A. R. Tetlow of ‘D’ Company, stating that he was killed on the evening of the 16th, while the North Cheshire Herald further reported that in his last letter home, Wilkinson said he had lost his sense of taste as he had ‘had a bit of gas’. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
