Captain William Thomas Woodfield served on the Western Front during the Great War in the ranks of the 15th and latterly the 20th London Regiment. On the outbreak of the Second World War he received an Emergency Commision into the Regular Army, being confirmed in the rank of Captain on 3 December 1939.
