George Golding was killed in action, 1 July, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and also on the War Memorial at Barnett, Hertfordshire. Served in 6 Platoon, ‘B’ Company, London Rifle Brigade.
‘At 12.50 a.m. on the 1st July, 1916, this battalion consisted of 23 Officers and 803 Other Ranks. During the first assault ‘B’ Company was kept in reserve, but at 9.00 a.m., Platoons 5 & 6 were sent into the attack but failed in the attempt as so many men fell casualty to the artillery barrage the enemy put down, also the concentrated machine gun fire. At the end of the day, the final casualties of this battalion amounted to 83%.’
