Walter Albert Hartfield was born in Woolwich in June 1848 and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer in November 1872. An Engine Room Artificer by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (May to November 1882), he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal on his return to the U.K. in the latter month. Hartfield was advanced to Chief E.R.A. in January 1883 and died of consumption while at Ascension Island in August 1889; sold with a file of research, including copied service record and death certificate, in addition to an original First Day Cover, “Royal Naval Crests of the Ships Which Have Called at Ascension”, 1969.
