James Ramsay Hobday was born in 1850 and appointed Ensign in the 25th Foot in January 1869. He transferred to the Bengal Staff Corps in March 1871 as a Lieutenant and served in the Afghan war with the Kandahar Field Force in 1879 (Medal). Promoted to Captain in 1881, he served in the Burmese expedition 1886-87, in charge of Survey (Despatches; Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major); Burma 1889-90, Poukhan and Tonhon expeditions (2 clasps); and on the Chinese frontier 1890-91 (Despatches). Hobday retired in the rank of Colonel in 1903. His boundary dividing Burma from China was recognised by the Government of India.
