On the 21st May 1982 HMS Ardent bombarded the airfield at Goose Green in support of the landings. She was attacked twice by Argentinian aircraft and, on the second occasion, was crippled by a bomb. 22 of the crew were killed, the ship abandoned burning and later sinking. The recipient suffered burns during the action.
