He served as a Dental Officer in France & Flanders 1915-19; transfered to R.A.F. Dental Service 1919-21 but reverted to the Army Dental Corps with whom he held various appointments between the wars. On 10 September, 1939, he embarked for France as Deputy Director Dental Services with Medical HQ and Staff of the British Expeditionary Force. He formed two additional Dental units at Boulogne and Dieppe but these were rapidly overrun by the German attack in the summer of 1940. He returned to England in 1940, was promoted Acting Brigadier, and served on the Staff for the remainder of the war.
