‘At about 5.50 p.m. on the 19th inst., a man named Charles Halt, fell into the Canada Dock and was brought ashore in an unconscious state. His resuscitation, though ultimately successful, proved exceedingly difficult and it was necessary to continue the operations for restoring the apparently drowned man from 5.50 to 7.30 p.m. The combined efforts, however, of Gatekeeper Williams and Constable Sheppard, and of Mr W. E, Edwards of the Floated Timber Department, a member of the Company’s Life Saving Society, proved effectual, and the man was sufficiently restored to be sent, by the doctor who was summoned, to the infirmary.’ (ref: Surrey Commercial Dock Committee Minutes).
