The Glasgow Herald, Wednesday 17th March 1943 reported: ‘BRAVERY MEDALS - The magistrates have awarded the Corporation Medal for Bravery to 11 men and one woman. The woman - Miss Millicent Johnston, 186 Archerhill Road - receives the distinction for rescuing a boy from drowning in the Forth and Clyde Canal. Private Lawrence Howard, RAMC, receives it for rescuing a four-year-old boy from the Kelvin. The other awards are in recognition of prompt and plucky actions in stopping runaway horses, and several of the recipients are constables.’
