Charles Frank Hilton was born in Lewisham, London on 23 October 1882. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy on 2 November 1903 as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class and confirmed in his rank in January 1905. During most of the Great War he served on the depot ship Adamant, January 1913-April 1917, attaining the rank of E.R.A. 1st Class in November 1915. Thereafter he served on Victory and Vernon, being awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in November 1918. Hilton was demobilised on 29 March 1919.
