William Thomas Martin was born in Perranrwothal, Cornwall on 2 September 1866. Entering the Royal Navy in April 1890, he attained the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class in June 1909. Served on Highflyer, December 1899-November 1908. Pensioned in May 1912, he returned to the service for the Great War, serving on the 1st class cruiser Argonaut, August 1914-September 1915; his later postings were all on shore bases. With copied service papers and roll extract.

Joseph Edward Mace was born in Poplar, London on 26 January 1869. Entering the Royal Navy in October 1895, he attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1911. Served on
Pique, February 1900-August 1903, seeing service in China for which he was awarded a medal. Served throughout the Great War, based at Leander and Vivid, aboard the destroyer Albatross and torpedo boat T.B.035, January 1914-July 1918. Awarded the 1914-15 Star trio. Demobilised on 17 March 1919. With copied service papers.
