James Benick Mantle was born in Newtown, Isle of Wight on 19 May 1840. He entered the Royal Navy in May 1869 and attained the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer in June 1879. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1879 when on the screw-propelled 1st rate ship Duncan. Invalided to Haslar in July 1887; he died in Kent in 1915. With copied service papers.
