Charles Henry French was born in Norwood, Surrey on 29 March 1850. Entering the Royal Navy in March 1880, he attained the rank of Engine Room Artificer in March 1881. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1890 aboard the armoured cruiser Warspite - flagship of the Pacific Station. Invalided in April 1895. With copied service paper.
