George Jones was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire on 2 December 1872. Entering the Royal Navy in April 1894, he attained the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class in March 1909. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1909. During the Great War he served on the battlecruiser Tiger, March 1914-March 1917, seeing action at the battles of Dogger Bank and Jutland. Jones died in the R.N. Hospital, Plymouth on 22 October 1917.

Alfred McDowell was born in Canning Town, Essex on 14 July 1870. Entering the Royal Navy in October 1894, he attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in January 1911. Awarded the Queen’s South Africa Medal without clasp for his service aboard
Monarch, August 1898-July 1901; awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1909 on the battleship Swiftsure. During the Great War he served on the cruisers, Southampton, November 1912-January 1915 and Castor, November 1915-February 1919. Present at the battle of Jutland, Castor was the flagship of the 11th Destroyer Squadron. McDowell was awarded the Russian St. George Medal for Bravery for his services during the battle.
