John William Kipping was born in North Shields, Northumberland on 21 October 1872. Entering the Royal Navy in October 1899, he attained the rate of Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class in July 1910 and was promoted to Acting Artificer Engineer in September 1910. Strangely in view of his promotion, it was as a C.E.R.A. 2nd Class that he served on the protected cruiser Hawk from February 1913. He was killed on 15 October 1914 when the vessel was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by the German submarine U.9. The ship, part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron on the Northern Patrol, became a target after she had stopped to take on mail. His L.S. & G.C. was awarded posthumously in June 1915. With copied service papers and other research.
