David Lodge was born in Parkstone, near Poole, Dorset. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 95th Regiment at Winchester on 10 January 1851, aged 17 years. Serving in the Crimea, he was wounded in the hand during the battle of Alma, 20 September 1854. As a result of his wound, Lodge was discharged as being unfit for further military service. The Staff Surgeon’s medical report reads, ‘Left hand rendered useless by a musket ball received at the Battle of Alma. The ball entered the back and made its exit at the opposite side, smashing the metacarpal bones.’
