Victor Wakeling was born in Shoreditch, London, lived in Hoxton and enlisted at Nottingham. Serving with the 11th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1 July 1916 - the first day of the battle of the Somme. Aged 19 years at the time of his death; he was the son of W. H. and Louisa Wakeling, of 23 Hoxton Square, Shoreditch, London. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
