Rugha Singh enlisted into the Indian Army on 29 March 1903. Appointed Jemadar in May 1916 and Subadar in May 1918. During the Great War he served in Mesopotamia, 1916-18 and was mentioned in despatches (Government of India No. 2542 of April 1918. afterwards he served in the Third Afghan War 1919.
