William Arthur Calnek was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on 7 July 1886. A Painter and Paperhanger by occupation, he enlisted into the 183rd (Manitoba Beavers) Battalion at Camp Hughes, Manitoba, in September 1916. Arriving in England with the Battalion in October 1916, he was posted to the 27th (City of Winnipeg) Battalion in France in March 1917, with whom he won his M.M.; sold with copied service papers.
