Having witnessed action on the North West Frontier in 1859-60, the 6th Punjabis were heavily engaged in the Umbeyla operations of 1863, not least in the action at Guru Mountain on 26 October, when the regiment suffered losses of 13 killed and ‘about fifty rank and file wounded’ - four Native Officers and men won the 3rd Class Indian Order of Merit on the same occasion. Later, on 20 November, the regiment assisted at the re-capture the Crag Piquet, a Bugler and Sepoy winning two further awards of the Indian Order of Merit.
