James Jenkin was appointed an Ensign in the 84th Foot on 3 October 1799, at the age of 19. He was appointed Adjutant from 24 December 1800, and promoted to Lieutenant in May 1802 and Captain in May 1808. He served in the Walcheren Expedition in 1809, and in the Peninsula from July 1813 to April 1814. He was present at the crossing of the Bidassoa, the battles of Nivelle and Nive, and the investment of Bayonne. He ‘was wounded at the Battle of the Nive on the 10 December 1813, when in command of the 2nd Battalion 84th Regt.’ Jenkin was awarded the Gold Medal for Nive having succeeded to the command after the death in action of Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Lloyd. When buried, Lloyd was placed upright in his grave in the hope that he would get no rest even in death, such was his unpopularity in the regiment. Jenkin was given a brevet Majority on 26 December 1813, from which date he remained on the unattached list of the Army until 1 June 1826, when he accepted promotion to Major. He retired in August 1831. Sold with copied statement of services and other research.
