Thomas Thornton was born in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. He attested for the 39th Regiment at Walsall, Staffordshire on 23 October 1857, aged 20 years. Thornton deserted, 17 March-19 May 1858 and was tried and imprisoned, 20 May-29 July 1858. Re-engaged to complete 21 years service at Enniskillen on 23 July 1867. Served abroad in Bermuda, November 1859-March 1864 and East Indies, January 1873-March 1879. Discharged at Netley on 22 December 1879 being unfit for further service - varicose veins. With copied service papers.
