Harry Gordon Waterfield was born on 23 April 1869, to Lieutenant Henry Gordon Waterfield, Bengal Staff Corps and Emily Scott Waterfield, nee Barber. Joined the Punjab Police Department on 9 April 1891. Appointed Assistant District Superintendent of Police in October 1892; Assistant to the General Superintendent of Thagi and Dakaiti Department, Central India, November 1895; Assistant to the Agent in Central India for Dakaiti, September 1904; and Assistant to the Agent to the Governor in Central India Criminal Branch Inspector-General of Police, April 1906. Awarded the K.P.M. in 1911.
