Stanley Ernest Birt was born in Lydney, Gloucestershire on 30 April 1898. A Clerk by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Naval Air Service on 25 October 1917. Transferred to No. 9 Squadron in March 1918. For his wartime services with R.A.F. Independent Force, France he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the M.S.M. Awarded the B.E.M. in the Coronation Honours List of 1937. Was commissioned a Flying Officer in the Equipment Branch of the R.A.F. on 29 February 1940 and was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in December 1941 and Squadron Leader in June 1943. He retired from the service on 12 September 1950.
