Note: Neither Delhi Durbar 1903 nor W.W.I M.I.D. is confirmed. Medals are all officially named, except the I.G.S. 1908, but none of the clasps have been confirmed.
Thomas Whittaker was born in Burnley, Lancs., on 13 August 1867, and enlisted there into the East Lancashire Regiment on 13 September 1886, a Groom by trade. He served in India from 7 January 1887, and was transferred to the Unattached List (Commissariat Department) on 21 February 1891. He was promoted to Conductor (Supernumerary) on 1 October 1904, and confirmed in that rank on 12 February 1905. He was first commissioned as Assistant Commissary, with the Hon. rank of Lieutenant, on 1 September 1914, and served in France from 24 November 1914 (m.i.c. confirms 1914-15 Star trio) as Supply Officer to 2nd Indian Cavalry Divisional Supply Column. He was promoted to Commissary, with the Hon. rank of Captain, S. & T. Corps Bengal, on 1 August 1916, and after a short spell in England from 12 August, he proceeded to India aboard the S.S. Mongolia on 12 October 1916. His final promotion was to Commissary with Hon. rank of Major, S. & T. Corps Bengal, on 21 September 1917, serving at some point with No. 6 Camel Depot. The Indian Army List for 1921 shows him as on leave ex-India for 12 months pending retirement. Sold with copied service papers, Medal Index Card and other research.
