William Edgill was born in Sculcoates, Hull. A Fisherman by occupation, he attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment at Grimsby on 21 January 1890, aged 18 years, 9 months. With them he served in India, March 1891-October 1892; Straits Settlements, October 1892-April 1895, and Malta, April 1895-June 1896. Transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1897.

Recalled to the Colours in December 1899, he served in South Africa. Discharged on 12 March 1903. Possibly re-engaged in 1914 as Private 8180 in the 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, entering France on 22 October 1914. With copied service papers, roll extracts and m.i.c.
