Francis Benn was born in Limerick. An Accoutrement Maker by occupation, he attested for the Connaught Rangers at Limerick on 30 January 1889, aged 18 years, 6 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in Malta, July 1889-February 1895 and Egypt, February 1895-February 1897. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1897, he was recalled to the Colours in October 1899 and served in South Africa, November 1899-September 1900. Benn was invalided from South Africa and was discharged in February 1902 at the termination of his period of engagement. With copied service papers and roll extracts - the later confirming the above clasps.
