Edward Arthur Spicer was born in East Fordington, near Dorchester, Dorset. A Carman by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Dorchester on 10 October 1896, aged 19 years, 5 months. With ‘G’ Battery R.H.A. he served in South Africa, October 1899-August 1902. During the battle of Magersfontein, 11 December 1899, ‘G’ Battery, together with three Field Batteries, fired over 1000 rounds and remained in position for 30 consecutive hours within 1500 yards of the Boer positions. Men of ‘G’ Battery were mistakenly subjected to Boer artillery fire during the post-battle truce to remove casualties. Spicer then served in India, August 1902-November 1904. Transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1904; discharged having completed his service in October 1908. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
