George Thatcher was born in Fulham, London. A Groom by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at London on 5 July 1888, aged 18 years, 4 months. After service at Home he was transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1895. He rejoined the Colours in October 1899 and served with the 76th Battery R.F.A. in South Africa, January 1900-July 1901. He was discharged having completed his service in July 1901. With copied service papers and roll extract.
