H. Pepper was born on 28 November 1867. Joining the British Army c.1886, he was posted to India in 1887; shown as a Sergeant in the Indian Army List of 1897. Served as Clerk to Sir Robert Lockhart in the 1897-98 Tirah Campaign and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 5 April 1898). By 1903 he was Conductor and Head of the Clerical Department in British Somaliland during the fight against the ‘Mad Mullah’, and was again mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 2 September 1904). In 1904 Pepper was ranked as Assistant Commissary and Hon. Lieutenant and in 1911 he was Deputy Commissary and Hon. Captain. Served on the Staff of General Maude in Mesopotamia during the Great War and was once more mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 13 March 1918). In 1920 he ranked as Commissary and Hon. Major. Awarded the O.B.E. in 1919. With copied service notes.
