Private William Baker, 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, entered France on 23 August 1914. The 1/Rifles were placed in the 11th Infantry Brigade, 4th Division, in Pulteney’s III Army Corps. Their first major battle was at Le Cateau where the 4th Division held the left flank. 11th Brigade held Fontaine-au-Pire. The Germans assaulted them with a very heavy artillery attack. They were withdrawn south of the Warnelle Ravine. In October they were involved in the fighting around Neuve Chapelle. The 4th Division held a one mile front east of Ploegsteert Wood where the Germans attacked recklessly and lost heavily. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
