James Ashley was born in Shoreditch, London, on 25 March 1879. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 22 November 1894 and was promoted to Boy 1st Class in September 1895. Promoted to Ordinary Seaman in March 1897; Able Seaman in August 1898; Leading Seaman in October 1905 and Petty Officer in September 1906. Petty Officer 1st Class Ashley was awarded the R.V.M. in Bronze in June 1910 for service on the occasion of King Edward VII’s funeral. Ranked as Acting Gunner in October 1910 and Gunner in October 1911. He retired on 23 June 1920. He died on 27 August 1935. With some copied service notes.
