Private Robert Henry Shevels, 8th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, was killed in action on the first day of the Somme, 1 July 1916, and is commemorated by name on the Thiepval Memorial. He was aged 26 and the son of Robert and Jane Shevels, of Bearpark Colliery, Durham.

Private Edwin J. Clare first served with The Queen’s in the Balkans from 2 December 1915, and afterwards with the 21st Rifle Brigade.
