Thomas Casserley served as a Lieutenant in the Wellington Infantry Battalion in Gallipoli. A noted athlete, whose accomplishments included the title of champion hammer thrower of New Zealand, he was onetime given the task of swimming underwater to cut enemy wire. He is also believed to have been captured but made his escape. Subsequently wounded at Chanuk Bair on 10 August 1915, Casserely suffered the amputation of one of his legs.
