George Matthews was born in Calne, Wiltshire on 19 February 1861. He enlisted into the Royal Marines at Bristol on 19 February 1880. Served on H.M.S. Invincible, January 1883-December 1885, being present at the bombardment of Alexandria and landed with the Naval Brigade. With copied service papers. Discharged dead on 25 April 1900.
