John William Adams was born in 1866 in Oldham, Lancashire, and attested for the Manchester Regiment on 4 November 1884, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion. Appointed Drummer on 22 November 1890, he served with the Second Miranzai Expeditionary Force under Brigadier-General Lockhart in the operations against the Samana Heights, 5 April to 25 May 1891, before transferring to the Army Reserve on 1 March 1892. He was discharge on 3 November 1896, after 12 years’ service.
