Robert Robertson was born in Nottingham in 1880 and attested for the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Glasgow on 27 March 1894. Appointed a Drummer on 1 September 1895, he served with the Regiment in India from 24 September 1896 until 17 July 1900, and in South Africa from 25 August 1900 until 16 February 1903. Returning to the United Kingdom, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal (case no. 36,202), for ‘on the 13th August, 1908, John McKie accidentally fell into the dock at Ayr, there being a depth of 14 feet. Lance-Corpl. R. Robertson, Royal Scots Fusiliers, jumped in and was successful in saving him.’ He was discharged on 26 March 1916, after 22 years’ service, but was re-called up for further service during the Great War on 28 November 1916, and posted to the 3rd Battalion. Promoted to Sergeant Drummer on 18 July 1919, he transferred to Class ‘Z’ Army Reserve on demobilization on 2 March 1920, having served fro the entire Great War at home.
